I thought you might be interested in a thread on my efforts to model Birmingham New Street in P4. I will start off with some recent pictures of my progress so far
Part of the Western station throat
A parcels van rests in one of the bay platforms
A class 50 waits to head south
A class 47 heads towards London. This isnt actually part of the layout but a test plank I built to try out my ideas on scratchbuilding OLE
One of Birmingham's 'fleetline' buses. This model was converted from a Britbus Atlantean using my own etches.
That's awesome modeling what you've done. Your track and level of detail is impressive. I'm a silent follower of your thread on rmweb, too. I like your recent idea of an open phone box on a lamp post. Your "plank" is kind of inspiration to start building something small for myself, though in a smaller scale and most not to scale standards.
I struggle to understand british OHLE. I've read your article and Clive's great web page, but on a recent holiday in england I just stared at the overhead structure at KX and Paddington and didn't know how ever that can be modeled. Quite impressed with your achievements.
thanks for honouring this forum with a posting. Needless to say your original thread at rmweb is a top read due to the overwhelming quality of your layout. The best comment there was IMO that, when some random pics of the real thing were posted, more than one member actually believed them to be taken from your layout. How about placing a permanent selection of all time great shots in the gallery (Bildergalerie)?
I think quite a lot of folks around here are taking great inspiration from rmweb. However, despite being registered there, I am not going to post cause what I would have to offer is just not good enough (yet).
There is no doubt you'll solve the catenary issue most properly, so I'm looking forward to mac's replication of it in N gauge
welcome and congratulations for your excellent workmanship, your scenery is really a class of its own and real artwork. I just wondered whether these nigth impressions of the class 50 and class 47 are real life or taken from a model layout...
All of the pictures are indeed models although a little photoshop has been used to add things like diesel exhaust. The OLE shown was a scratchbuilt prototype but I am slowly working on my own etches for the main layout.
The following picture shows construction in progress and gives an idea to how its put together.
The portal so far
my welded rod portal.
Turning to simple masts for a moment. I have done a little etch for a bracket to hold the cantelevers to the post.
This is VERY close up - to give you an idea the pole is 0.6mm wide and the H section post 2mm across
following is my registration arm mounted in position
and finally an overall shot of the finished cantelever assembly
I fancied something a bit different and inspired by this thread http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.p...__1#entry270430 I decided to have a go at the sculpture above the gateway. The building itself is a long way off yet but this is what I came up with
Using layers of paper and plasticote suede paint. Its 40mm across.
